Medicinal Plants or herbs are core components of “Ethno
medicine” being practiced world wide in diverse disciplines
but in among, Indian System of Medicine is the most ancient
medical treatise and extrapolates vividly on diverse
therapeutic applications to them. India has 16 different
bioclimatic zones among 20 and stands 7th in the world for
biodiversity. India has so far identified 15000 medicinal
plants of which 1200 are being used in regular use which
again stands highest in percentage of medicinal flora.
In modern epics, medicinal plants are gaining exclusive and
grave importance in prevention, mitigation and curing of
diseases for which no satisfactory remedies are on hand.
World Health Organization WHO with this very fact and due
respect, has taken strategic steps and decided guidelines
for the Assessment of Herbal Medicines (WHO/TRM/91.4). These
guidelines scrutinize traditional medical experience with
polyherbal preparation for long-term use on the basis of
Evidence Based Medicine. Ethno herbal medicines have two
special characteristics which distinguish them from chemical
drugs; first, being used for prolonged tenure and second it
exhibits lesser side effects.
Empirical experience has shown that there are real benefits
in the long-term use of whole medicinal plants and their
extracts, since the constituents in them work in synergistic
and additive way. Active functional bio components like
primary and secondary metabolites gets built in plants as a
result of edaphilic conditions, stress, competition and
threat of predators. Therefore there is a significance of
procuring herbs from its most suitable eco friendly way from
nature’s harmony.
